Tosin Abasi Interview // Summer Slaughter 2010
Full interview here: guitarmessenger.com/tosin-abasi-interview-animals-as-leaders/
July 31, 2010: First emerging onto the metal scene with the Washington D.C.-based Reflux, extended-range guitarist Tosin Abasi quickly distinguished himself with his relentless riffage and captivating lead work. After Reflux disbanded, Tosin began work on a solo instrumental effort, the result of which was Animals As Leaders: a 12-track journey that leads listeners through an eclectic blend of progressive, guitar-driven music that fuses heavy, mesmerizing 8-string grooves and virtuosic lead work with tasteful electronic production and a range of stylistic influences.
Guitar legend Steve Vai sums Abasi up with these thoughts: ‘When I first heard Animals As Leaders I felt as though I was at last hearing the future of creative, heavy virtuoso guitar playing. It’s quite amazing.’ Since the release of the debut record, Animals As Leaders has grown into a full band and completed a number of high profile tours to date - including Summer Slaughter 2010, where I had the chance to sit down and talk with Tosin:

still work hard on this
Yo the chorus of this song has one of the best guitar Melody ever
Remember bros. Guitar. It’s Best.
Bro I found this song so late 🤦♂️ it’s so damn amazing 😫😭
bro you may as well write those tabs in wingdings
Ibanez model?
Dam……
"You can do..." No, I don't think I can do
Chuggggg
I fucking love him so much. One of the most if not the most talented musicians in modern metal
my most play track for 2024..
THIS IS OUT OF THIS WORLD . HE IS A SPECIAL PERSON . THESE ARE EXTREMELY ADVANCED IDEAS ! GOD BLESS YOU STEPHEN TARANTO !
He is freaking phenomenal 😮
I really want to try the open major tuning for heavy music
First time seeing this, and I felt like I was walking on top of clouds. Heavenly sounding.
anyone know the lick here? 0:50 thank you😁
Close your eyes. Listen to the downpicking vs alt picking examples. Realise they sound exactly the same. Maybe clean you'd notice but you can't hear it here, you definitely wouldn't hear it in a full mix. Or just give yourself tennis elbow when you're older like Holt from Exodus.
He’s so cute
0:16 singer looks like 2012 pewdiepie XD
ffffff!!!!
Ola looked like a baby 😂. Not the UA-camr machine as he's today.
My favourite guitarist forever
People are fucking weird. Jason Richardson was only in the band for the discovery. He didn’t even work on any other album. It sounds like people want to fixate on one project over a band overall. They fixate on fast guitar solos. I think the band overall has made a great discography of themselves and I continue to listen to all their albums to this day regardless if Richardson is on it or not.
I've never been inspired more from a guitar player than I have watching Stephen play! The clean chops and effortless playing is second to none!
Buy a whammy bar hah
T-Mac
so this is where the holy selective picking lick comes from
Adam, can you play metal guitar? I don't know, I'll try now... oh, she's electrocuting dude ))
0:56 a part of the Autotheism Movement II: Emancipate That's so cool🔥💯
Mash the fretboard
sickk!!! it's tooo nasty!
He’s way better than he was in this video now
impresive work but to my ears this sounds like engine nois, not music.
Shit, I was too busy listening to the drummer.
Thank you for uploading this!
I miss Michael Keene. Nobody plays or writes like he does. Shame.
A classic. I remember watching this and the accompanying lessons summer of 2010 and being completely blown away. Was an AAL devotee from there on out. Thanks for reuploading.
This is truly crazy. It’s not just the technique but the songwriting and flow. Also, long live the rock stance 🎉
Anyone know what pick and thickness he uses?
Hahaaaa....wut
Holy fuck 😮
This is so amazing!!! 🎸🔥🤟🏻
Beast player, scary good 🔥👏
so precise, really thanks man for good music.
❤
This guy is OP
I think I became pregnant watching this video. I don't know what with, riffs and licks I suppose. Holy damn, Steve.
For those who liked Helix Nebula, make sure to check out his EP Permanence, it's even better imo. also that part after 5:00 shit
Love Stephen Tarantos playing! But I have to say I don't like the mix of this track. The percussiveness (especially the guitar and the drums) interrupts the melodic undertone of the song.
Same problem for the mix on Permanence. The guitar is buried, which is such a bizarre creative decision. He's the Christopher Nolan of guitar recording.
New style of soloing....but so fucking boring ☝️
its the opposite of boring
